Key Takeaways

  • Earnings season lived up to the hype with another quarter of double-digit growth
  • Caution was the watchword due in part to geopolitics and rising U.S. Treasury prices
  • A third rate hike in September could be likely; fourth one still a toss-up

As we enter the longest bull market in history, it’s natural to wonder how much more it can run. Market conditions can shift rapidly, but every 200 point swing in the Dow isn’t likely the cause for concern that financial media makes it seem. Still, it can be challenging to cut through all the noise and distinguish what’s important and what’s not.

Having a foundation of knowledge and skills can help you manage your portfolio regardless of market conditions, but it’s essential to know how and when to apply it. That’s what TD Ameritrade’s Investor Education Day is all about.

Sign up here for online sessions taking place on Wednesday, October 24 from 1 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. ET. Attendees can brush up on evergreen skills such as technical analysis and value investing, or learn about current geopolitical factors at play and potential ideas to help protect a portfolio in a bear market. The day’s events will be hosted by TD Ameritrade Education Coaches, there’s no cost to attend and anyone is welcome to join.

Below you’ll find links and a description of each session to see which ones you’re interested in—feel free to join us for one or stick around for all of them. Can’t make it? Don’t worry, we know you’re busy. All of the webcasts are scheduled to be archived and posted online after the event here. Here’s a look at what’s on the agenda:

Value Investing for the Bargain Hunter (1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. ET)

“Value investing is the process of trying to acquire a stock for less than its actual worth, then holding onto it until the value is realized,” Education Coach Michael Fairbourn points out. This session is designed to help you develop a better understanding of valuation metrics and various ways value investors try to locate potentially undervalued opportunities in Michael’s value investing crash course.

Building a Portfolio to Focus on Dividend Stocks (2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. ET)

While some trading strategies try to time the market, and others try to find growth stocks, dividend investing relies on quarterly payments. Education Coach Cameron May will discuss features to look for in dividend stocks and ways to set up a portfolio to help you pursue dividend income.

Using Technical Analysis to Assess Potential Stock Movement (3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. ET)

“Technical analysis is really all about planning your trade and then trading that plan. This knowledge can help you determine potential entry and exit points, as well as help manage your position,” Education Coach Scott Thompson says. In this session, Scott will cover stock investing with technical analysis to help determine trends, support and resistance, and potential stock movement based on technical indicators.

How Global Factors May Affect Sectors Within Your Portfolio (4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. ET)

The world is more connected than ever and macroeconomic events around the globe typically impact U.S equity markets. A guest presenter will be joining us from Morningstar to show how certain issues and policies could potentially impact your portfolio.

Using Options Designed to Protect a Portfolio from a Potential Market Sell-Off (5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. ET)

Coach James Boyd takes you through strategies designed to help protect your portfolio in the event of a market downturn by using tactics such as shifting money to other asset classes and using options to temporarily help protect the equity portion of a portfolio.

Don’t forget to sign up for the sessions you’re interested in and we hope you can join us. If webcasts aren’t how you like to learn, check out our other resources to keep building your investing and trading knowledge.
