What was the moment you realized the markets are where you wanted to be?

I like observing the markets. My first job out of college was covering business at a newspaper on the U.S.-Mexico border. I realized writing about business and economics is a great way to understand the world and what’s important to everyone.

What’s the “Golden Rule” you live by?

Aside from the classic “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” I am reminded of a story from my college years. During an internship in Washington, I went to a talk where the great investigative journalist Bob Woodward was speaking. Afterward, I stopped him because I wanted to meet him. I started my introduction with “I’m sorry”—as in sorry to bug you. He immediately said: “Don’t be sorry.” Great advice from a great reporter.

Who’s your investing or trading idol?

To the extent that I have one, I suppose it would be Warren Buffett. He encourages people to invest in businesses they understand, and he’s philanthropically minded. But the movie The Big Short did make those guys look pretty cool too.

When not working, you can find me …

Climbing rock and ice, skiing, hiking, or bicycle camping. I also teach climbing to kids at a local gym.

Tell us something the world doesn’t know about you.

The longest hike I’ve done in one day was 42 miles.
