Dan Rosenberg

Dan began writing about the financial markets in 1996 when he joined Dow Jones Newswires in Chicago as a reporter covering agricultural futures and the Chicago futures exchanges. He became deputy bureau chief of the Dow Jones Chicago bureau, and contributed frequently to The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s. He also had a second career in public relations, spending six years as spokesman for Hospira, a pharmaceutical company.

What was the moment you realized the markets are where you wanted to be?

I knew very little about the markets until the day I started covering them, so I underwent trial by fire. It turned out to be an exciting on-the-job education, and the more I wrote about futures and equities, the more fascinating I found them. I never realized until then how much the markets affect our lives.

What’s the “Golden Rule” you live by?

Try to make everyone’s day a little better, no matter who it is.

Who’s your investing or trading idol?

It seems generic to say it, but it has to be Warren Buffett. He’s taught me the importance of staying within oneself as an investor, only investing in what you understand, not chasing trends, and holding onto investments for the long haul. I also admire him for admitting publicly when he’s wrong about an investment, and for his homespun Midwest wisdom.

When not working you can find me …

Trying out new restaurants around Chicago with my wife and two boys, ages 16 and 12. We’re all very adventurous eaters.

Tell us something the world doesn’t know about you.

I interviewed Bill Clinton one-on-one for my college newspaper. I attended one of the debates during his first Presidential race and managed to push my way through the crowd to him afterward. He was very gracious and spent a few minutes with me.
